On April 27th, controversy arose when the Polish press published reports that three works by female artists had been removed from the galleries at the National Museum in Warsaw. The art, by prominent artist Natalie LL, showing a young woman eating a banana was removed because of a critique from the Ministry of Culture. A spokesperson stated that the Ministry claimed that they had received a complaint by a mother who visited the exhibition with a young child and became offended. However, this led to a few hundred people eating bananas outside the Warsaw gallery to protest censorship. It is incredible that an art piece controversy has the ability to produce a community protest. Where does the line get drawn when it comes to sexually explicit art? Also, would there be the same measures used to remove the art if it was a man insinuating a sexual act?
