Vandalizing Street Art

November 11, 2014

Although a bit older, the New York Magazine looked at graffiti pieces being vandalized by “The Splasher”. The article goes on to explore the possible identity of the vandal, and interviews artists who had their work splashed. Banksy’s work in New York was targeted as well, creating an outcry from those who appreciated the work. On one hand, some agree with The Splasher’s symbolism: street art has deviated from its original messages to cater to the market, but others see it as a mindless act of destruction. I’m curious on other’s reactions-should certain kind of street art be protected, and how does that change the art form? If yes, how do you decide what to protect, and if not, why?
