Nazi Imagery in Pop Music

War iconography is striking and easily recognizable, and serves as a powerful medium for artists. However, not all iconography is acceptable to change, as Nikki Minaj’s video suggests. The video was heavily criticized for its Nazi imagery, and according to the above article, Minaj’s imagery choices are different but insensitive. For such potent symbolism, how much artistic license should be allowed? Is it acceptable to use such a historically loaded symbol for music? Musically and visually, artists are constantly pushing the boundaries-are there any untouchable topics?
