Diplo On Major Lazer, Why EDM Is Horrible And How Mad Decent Created A Culture

April 26, 2013

This article focuses on how culture is created as a mélange of other cultural artifacts. Of particular interest is the way this happens in relationship to the recording industry. One example given is the Harlem Shake, a 30-second clip of sound taken from a mix of other stolen sounds and set to video. Diplo, a recording artist, says, "There are no rules to running a label anymore. We have, like, seven people working for us, but Interscope probably didn't even have a record as big as 'Harlem Shake' last year and they have thousands working for them." This article is poignant due to the fact that it discusses the "sketchy" part of musical culture that the recording industry, and its lawyers, don't want the public to know about.
