Graffiti by Tatiana Garcia

April 24, 2013

Graffiti is writing or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place. If done without permission from the property owner, it is considered defacement and vandalism. Graffiti may express underlying social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles. Graffiti is seen throughout hip hop culture and gangs as well. Forms of graffiti have existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire. Controversy continues to exist and create disagreement among city officials, law enforcement, and writers who wish to display and appreciate work in public locations. I think graffiti is a great form of expression especially when done to to express social and political messages. I don't support graffiti when it comes to gangs because it brings about violence. What do you all think... art or crime?
