Officials in Sydney, Australia had arranged for a crosswalk to be painted with rainbow stripes in celebration of a gay-friendly Mardi Gras celebration. The crosswalk was a hit– people all over town loved it! Recently, however, the New South Wales transportation ministry decided to have it stealthily removed in the middle of the night. In response, residents across Sydney have been painting their own rainbow crosswalks in their own neighborhoods. Some are simple chalk markings on back alleys– some are more daring. There is even a facebook page entitled DIY Rainbow Crossings. In less than 48 hours, this page had over 4,000 likes and hundreds of pictures posted. This is clearly an act of rebellion among civic-minded people, but is it art or is it crime? Link to article: http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2013/04/12/3735929.htm?site=sydney
