Gardening as Crime Fighting
As someone who has several friends heavily into self-sufficient gardening, I was interested in the idea of something as seemingly mundane as growing produce helping to counter a criminal atmosphere. The article in question quotes a couple in Detroit living in a prostitution and drug-heavy who found that creating a public garden reduced crime by 30% in the neighborhood. The theory behind the effectiveness of this project is still unclear, but it seems to be a combination of combating a "broken windows" syndrome, and of creating community engagement by creating something for everyone to take pride in. I think it is interesting that a "practical" move like growing vegetables for a home or neighborhood could have such stark auxiliary benefits as well.
